Long ago, I vowed to leave my childhood home of Hawaii, and never return. People often asked, “Why would anyone leave paradise?” I’d respond, “It’s not really paradise when it’s all you’ve ever known.” I was determined to seek out grander purposes than an island could contain. The cosmos, apparently, had other plans.
In 2014, my husband and I set foot on Oahu, arms loaded with two young kids. All our belongings were floating in a metal container somewhere in the Pacific, bound to rendezvous with us soon. We had left behind a well-assembled life in Los Angeles, and now found ourselves with no plans for what was next.
All we knew was that something was compelling us to be in this place at this time. And that something, as invisible and mysterious as it was, happened to be the most powerful driving force I had ever known.
I had been influenced by this same force at many other moments in my life. It was a familiar friend, particularly in times I had been faced with a decision or crossroad. So though we faced an uncertain, unmapped future, I trusted we had a worthy guide to lead us.
