Day 3: New Girls

I was the new girl at school. She was too. I could tell because she wore the same hesitant, hopeful expression as I did. It was the first day of the 3rd grade, and Mrs. Welsh made us stand up to introduce ourselves.

With a quick glance, I calculated my chances at befriending this other new girl. She was clearly above my social grade, at least as far as looks went. Her thick brown hair framed a pretty, freckled face. Plus she had just moved from California, which sounded exotic to us small-town Maui kids. Meanwhile, I donned white denim overalls and new glasses, and by anyone's standard would have been characterized as awkward.

Though my cool factor was in short supply, I was very aware that elementary school would be unendurable without at least one friend in my corner.

So I made my move during lunch time in the cafeteria. I grabbed my plastic green food tray, and made a beeline to the other new girl. As luck would have it, she was sitting alone at a table.

With a small burst of uncharacteristic courage, I asked, “Do you want to eat lunch together?” With a nod and a shy "Sure," from her, a lifelong friendship was sealed.
