I was at the babysitter’s house, along with my brothers. We stayed there every afternoon for a few hours after school. The babysitter’s two sons, a few years older than me, usually played with us.
We were camped out in front of the TV, watching some film about a young girl piano prodigy. I was mesmerized by her delicate fingers flying across the piano keys, creating beautiful melodies. As she played Beethoven’s Für Elise, one of the babysitter’s sons said, “That’s so cool!”
Desiring to be impressive, I said, “I can play that.” In reality, I had never played the piano. But I assumed they’d take my word for it and be wowed by my apparent musical abilities.
However, one of the boys said, “No you can’t!” “Yes, I can.” “Okay then, show us.”
They marched me downstairs to their piano, and sat me down. I straightened my posture, and put my hands onto the keys like I had seen the piano prodigy do in the movie. With confidence, I played completely random two notes. Plunk, plunk. Then I stopped. “I need my mom’s help with the rest, “ I explained. The boys shook their heads at me knowingly, and walked away.
I made a mental note to come up with a more feasible lie next time.
