It was one of those perfect moments, when every element of the universe aligns together in harmony. We were strolling along the beach at dusk, listening to the singular sound of crashing waves. There was a crisp breeze flowing through the ocean air. The darkening sky began to sprout sprinkles of stars. As we glanced out toward the water, we noticed a strange, eerie sight. Each crashing wave was glowing neon blue, as if lit by thousands of glow sticks. As the wave retreated, the lights seemed to dim. Later we would find out we had witnessed the phenomenon of bioluminescent phytoplankton, microorganisms that emit light through the water. But in the moment, we simply received the sight with awe and wonder, content to enjoy life’s mystery and beauty.
