For my preschool graduation, there was a big ceremony in front of all the families. The teachers presented each child with a flower lei, diploma, and a unique award, like “Most Friendly” or “Best Artist.” I sat on the stage with all my classmates, as people’s names were called. I was excited to find out what award I was being given. My friend Mari, who was sitting next to me, got up to receive her award certificate and diploma.

Finally, I heard my name through the muffled microphone. “Larissa...(clap, clap, clap) receiving the Biggest Eater Award (laugher, more clapping).” The teacher shook my hand, and presented me with my award. That was my claim to fame as a preschooler: Biggest Eater.

This amused my family to no end. For years, we kept a framed photo on a shelf of me holding up that award certificate. I had a huge smile, with green chewing gum sticking out the side of my mouth.

Later, my teacher explained to my parents the reason for the award. There had been a school field trip on a cruise ship, which included a lunch buffet. According to the teacher, I had eaten more than any of the other students and adult chaperones.

Thus, I had earned the title of Biggest Eater. After that accomplishment, what was left to achieve?
