My grandmother is fond of reminding everyone to reuse and recycle. She talks often about growing up in poverty, and how she learned to never waste anything. Her home is full of saved and rescued items that she refuses to throw away. Plastic bags filled with more plastic bags. Plastic containers from take-out food and Costco. Magazines from 9 years ago. She comes home with random discarded items from the neighborhood.
Once while we were eating at my grandparents’ dinner table, I noticed pieces of Scotch tape stuck to the edges of the table. “What’s this tape for?” I asked. “It’s all the leftovers from Christmas gifts,” my Popo answered. True to form, she had dedicated time and energy to salvaging used pieces of tape to reuse later.
My grandpa had similar tendencies. He was known to wash his car when it rained so he didn’t use unnecessary hose water.
Now my grandparents’ home is aging and decaying, as everything eventually does. My grandpa passed away, and my grandma is currently trying to purge the house of its many unused contents.
So if you’re ever in need of some recycled Scotch tape, swing by my grandma’s house. She’s got you covered.
