I once made the mistake of telling my husband Steve that as a teenager, I sometimes ran with the skater, pseudo-goth crowd, and may have shopped at Hot Topic once in a while. He found this amusing to no end, and loves to remind me of this part of my past.
Here is what he has to say, in a manner of guest writing a memoir:
“Larissa used to shop at a store called Hot Topic. Maybe you’ve seen it in the mall - it’s that completely dark store with red highlights, where goth people shop. That one guy from Nightmare Before Christmas is basically on every sweatshirt. There’s a certain person who shops at Hot Topic, the kind of person who wears spikes in their hair or a chain that goes from their nose ring to their earring. I don’t hold it against Larissa that her favorite store for most, if not all, of high school was Hot Topic. Even though chains, dog collars, and nose rings aren’t exactly my thing, the fact that they were Larissa’s thing (and maybe secretly still are) is totally fine with me. Whenever we pass by Hot Topic in the mall, I always make it a point to let Larissa know that she’s free to go in there to buy stuff.”
