When I think of the kind of person I want to be in my old age, my husband’s grandmother Monica comes to mind.
The first time I met Monica, she acted as if she was positively delighted to meet me. Her eyes lit up, joy and exuberance just gushing out of her. Later, I realized that’s just how she is with everyone all the time.
Her eyesight is failing, and she is the primary caretaker for her husband. Most people in her stage of life either seem exhausted or cranky. Monica is neither of those. Despite her body aging, her soul is full of warmth and vitality that extends outward to others. When she asks you how you’re doing, she means it and is truly listening to your response.
I hope that I can be like that as I age - one who cherishes life, abides in joy, and makes others feel loved.
