While we were dating, Steve asked if I would dance the hula for him. I flat out refused, since it had been many years since my hula dancing days. I knew that I would feel silly and embarrassed. I was still testing the safety of our relationship. He and I were both doing this, in our own ways. How vulnerable could we each be with this other person? How much of ourselves could we share, and still be loved and received? The longer we dated, the deeper the intimacy and trust grew.
Later we got engaged, and began preparing for our wedding. In the months leading up to the wedding, I decided I was finally ready to dance for Steve. Our wedding day seemed to be the perfect time to offer this gift to the man I was making a lifelong commitment to. I recruited two of my close friends to choreograph and dance with me. We spent late nights practicing and perfecting our movements to the music. I wanted to surprise Steve, and I wanted it to be perfect.
On the evening of our wedding reception, our emcee announced that I, the bride, had a surprise wedding gift for my new husband. Steve was guided to a chair near the dance floor, wearing a confused grin on his face. The music began, and we started our dance. It wasn’t perfect - I messed up one of the movements - but it was still beautiful. As I danced in front of our wedding party and guests, I felt like I was soaring on wings, taking an adventurous leap into this unknown journey of marriage.
When the song came to a close, I looked into my new husband’s shining eyes, and knew that I had chosen a great life partner who was worth my trust and honor.
